Watch out for the cold!

When it's cold, don't go outside for a cigarette after a stressful meeting. Tobacco, cold and stress contract the blood vessels, multiplying the risk of heart attack.

The number of cardiovascular accidents increases in winter. The heart beats faster when exposed to sub-zero temperatures. The heart's oxygen consumption increases, and blood vessels contract, promoting blood coagulation and greater viscosity - all the more so as cold dehydrates the blood.

Every 1°C drop in outside temperature increases the number of heart attacks by 1% to 3% over the following four weeks, according to a UK study of 84,000 hospital admissions published in the British Medical Journal.

Let's cover up and avoid strenuous exercise in sub-zero temperatures. And don't forget to drink regularly, as the cold dehydrates!
