Walking is a fabulous way to prevent many illnesses.

"Walking is the best medicine for man", said Hippocrates. As well as being the simplest means of getting around, it's a physical activity in its own right, with a wealth of benefits.

Muscles are the first to benefit, not forgetting joints and skeletal bones. Walking is also the brain's health partner of choice. Just two hours' walking a week can reduce the risk of stroke by 30%.

As for memory, walking for 40 minutes three times a week would have protective effects on the brain areas responsible for memorization. Finally, symptoms of depression are reduced by 36% with 30 minutes of daily walking. It also prevents dementia, reduces the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, and helps combat stress.

3,500 steps a day reduces the risk of diabetes by 29%, and the risk of developing cardiovascular disease is significantly reduced after 30 minutes of daily walking. Blood pressure is reduced, as are cholesterol levels, and overall cardiovascular function is improved.
