Book Review: Mon combat pour le Cœur des Femmes (My Fight for Women’s Hearts)

In her book, Prof. Claire Mounier-Vehier, MD, sounds the alarm: cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of mortality among women, causing one out of every three deaths. Yet this disease is often linked to our environment and lifestyle, meaning that it can be avoided in 80% of cases simply by adopting healthier habits.

This book tells the story of growing awareness and mobilizing collectively to fight cardiovascular disease in women. Do we have to continue dying at 45 years old from an undiagnosed heart attack? Is it acceptable that women are diagnosed late? Can we tolerate having to amputate a 35-year-old’s leg for a disease that could have been avoided? Couldn’t fatigue, shortness of breath during activity and persistent nausea indicate something other than being a bit down when they exist in combination with certain risk factors? Lila, Angélique, Béatrice and Juliette each have moving and sometimes dramatic stories. What they’ve experienced must help other women to better understand the signs and symptoms of a disease that is still under-diagnosed. They all have one thing in common: an encounter with Prof. Claire Mounier-Vehier, MD. She puts all her energy into changing the way her colleagues in healthcare and the general public see cardiovascular disease in women. In a warm, direct style, she creates a connection with the reader, taking them into her appointments, conferences and everyday life. She shares how she’s fighting for women to have the right to live longer in good health. The book unveils:
• Details about the real threat all women face
• Real stories and devastating testimonials
• New risk factors, like social precarity and lack of time
• Medicine’s gender revolution: taking into account things that are specific to women
