A pig's heart transplanted into a patient

The story of the genesis of the first pig-to-human heart transplant is a veritable scientific epic, the development of xenotransplantation in an attempt to combat the shortage of grafts.

A pig's heart transplanted into a patient

This first transplant by the team of surgeons at the University of Maryland Medical Center is the culmination of an exceptional mobilization of research teams. The transplanted heart comes from a pig farm specifically designed for human transplants. These pigs are bred under strictly sterile conditions over several generations. They are also genetically modified using a genome-editing technique, the only way to avoid inevitable rejection. The 57-year-old patient was ineligible for organ donation, and all therapeutic solutions had been exhausted. Nevertheless, the very principle of xenotransplantation continues to provoke debate in the scientific community. Other researchers, faced with the shortage of transplants, are betting more on the capacities of stem cells or other types of therapy. To be continued...
