An aperitif with friends, a sunny terrace, a soccer evening... A little beer wouldn't go amiss. But your last blood test revealed a cholesterol level that's a little too high. Does this mean you shouldn't drink it?
As we all know, excess cholesterol will promote cardiovascular diseaseby contributing to the progressive clogging of arteries (atherosclerosis). To limit the risks, it's essential to adopt a balanced diet, engage in regular physical activity and watch your intake of foods rich in saturated fats. But what about alcoholic beverages, and beer in particular? Can it send your bad cholesterol (LDL) levels soaring, or, on the contrary, have a protective effect?

What is cholesterol?
Before getting to the heart of the matter, it's essential to know the role of cholesterol in our bodies. Contrary to popular belief, cholesterol is not intrinsically harmful. This lipid substance, naturally present in our bodies, plays a fundamental role in several essential biological functions:
- It participates in the manufacture and protection of cell membranes.
- It enables the synthesis of vitamin D, essential for bone and immune health.
- It is involved in the production of bile acids, which facilitate fat digestion.
- It is an indispensable precursor in the synthesis of certain hormones such as estrogen, testosterone and cortisol.
The problem arises in cases of lipid imbalance, when the level of "bad" cholesterol exceeds the threshold of recommendations
HDL and LDL: "good" or "bad" cholesterol?
There are two main types of cholesterol, which do not have the same impact on cardiovascular health:
- The "good" cholesterol HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein). It helps reduce cholesterol by transporting it to the liver, where it is broken down and eliminated. A high level of HDL is considered protective against cardiovascular disease.
- The "bad" cholesterol LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein). When present in excess, it promotes the formation of atherosclerotic plaques in the arteries, reducing their elasticity and then their caliber, and increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease.
Blood cholesterol levels are influenced by a number of factors, including genetics, diet, physical activity and alcohol consumption. That's why it's so important to think about beer consumption.

Does beer raise cholesterol levels?
Beer itself contains no cholesterol. It's mainly made up of water (around 90%), alcohol, carbohydrates from cereals (barley, wheat, corn) and hops. On the face of it, then, it poses no threat to our cholesterol.
Beer and cholesterol: an indirect but very real link
As you'll have gathered, beer doesn't directly influence cholesterol levels. But the way it's metabolized by our bodies can have indirect effects on our lipid profile...
- Alcohol increases blood triglyceride levels. Once ingested, the alcohol contained in beer is converted into fatty acids by the liver, which can lead to a rise in blood triglycerides. Excess triglycerides promote the deposition of fats in the arteries, even though this risk is much lower than that associated with excess LDL cholesterol, thus increasing the risk of heart attacks and strokes.
- Alcohol overloads the liver, which plays a central role in the production and elimination of cholesterol. Excessive alcohol consumption disrupts these processes, favoring an increase in "bad" cholesterol. Furthermore, prolonged liver overload can induce hepatic steatosis ("fatty liver"), a condition that further complicates lipid metabolism.
- The carbohydrates in beer can disrupt glycemic balance and promote insulin resistance, which can ultimately lead to type 2 diabetes. They also contribute to weight gain and abdominal fat accumulation, two risk factors for metabolic syndrome including high blood pressure, hyperglycemia and lower "good" cholesterol.
What are the risks associated with excessive beer consumption?
In summary, excessive beer consumption can lead to:
- an increase in triglycerides, favoring cardiovascular disease.
- a gain in weight and a metabolic syndrome, aggravating the risk of diabetes.
- a hepatic steatosis (foie gras), which can progress to more serious complications such as cirrhosis.
- An increase in blood pressure, which increases the risk of stroke and heart disease.
- Eventually a decrease in HDL cholesterol, with the loss of its protective role.
Not to mention the risks associated with heavy drinking, such as accidents, risky behavior and intentional violence.

Should you stop drinking beer altogether if you have high cholesterol?
No, it's not necessary to stop drinking beer altogether. An occasional glass of beer, integrated into a healthy lifestyle, poses no major problem. On the other hand, if you have high cholesterol or triglyceride levels and drink beer regularly, it may be wise to review your habits.
How much beer can you drink a day when you have cholesterol?
- Limit yourself to one glass of beer a day, and not every day!
- Prefer light beers, less rich in alcohol and carbohydrates.
- Avoid very sweet beers, such as some flavored or dark beers.
- Exercise regularly: regular physical activity helps maintain a good lipid balance.
- Watch your overall diet and avoid pairing beer with products rich in saturated fats, such as cold meats, fried foods or fatty cheeses.
Is alcohol-free beer preferable when you have cholesterol?
Some alcohol-free beers are in fact rich in sugars, which can disrupt lipid metabolism and increase the risk of diabetes. It's therefore important to read product labels carefully and favor low-carbohydrate alcohol-free beers.
