Red wine has always been touted for its cardiovascular health benefits. In particular, it could increase levels of good cholesterol, HDL cholesterol. But is it really true?
"A glass of red wine a day keeps the doctor away forever!" (In the saying, of English origin, it's the apple!) Really?
Red wine is often presented as an ally for the heart, thanks in particular to its richness in polyphenols. But is this reputation justified? Can it really help reduce cholesterol?.
What is cholesterol?
Contrary to what you might think, cholesterol is not intrinsically bad. On the contrary, it's a lipid essential to the proper functioning of our body. In particular, it's involved in the production of certain hormones, cell membranes, bile acids and vitamin D synthesis.
"Good" or "bad" cholesterol: what are the differences?
As you probably know, there is a distinction between:
- LDL (Low-Density Lipoprotein), known as "bad cholesteroll". It tends to accumulate in artery walls, forming atheromatous plaques that increase the risk of cardiovascular accidents.
- The HDL (High-Density Lipoprotein), also known as "good cholesterol". It helps transport cholesterol to the liver for elimination, thus limiting the risk of clogged arteries.
The problem arises when LDL cholesterol accumulates in the arteries in the form of plaque, leading to significant risks to cardiovascular health, including heart attacks and strokes. The challenge is therefore to adopt a healthy lifestyle to increase HDL levels while reducing LDL. This is where red wine is often cited.
Is red wine good for cardiovascular health?
Red wine is often presented as an ally of the heart, thanks in particular to its richness in polyphenols. But is this reputation scientifically founded? this question is the subject of much debate.
Red wine and its beneficial components
Numerous studies suggest that moderate consumption of red wine could:
- Increase "good" cholesterol (HDL). Polyphenols, including resveratrol and flavonoids, are thought to help increase HDL, which plays a protective role by helping to eliminate excess cholesterol.
- Reduce oxidation of "bad" cholesterol (LDL). Oxidation of LDL promotes the formation of atherosclerotic plaques in the arteries. Antioxidants in red wine could limit this phenomenon and thus limit the impact of bad cholesterol, without actually reducing its levels..
- Improve endothelial function. In small doses, red wine seems to promote relaxation of blood vessels with dilation, but in higher doses, alcohol promotes a spasm phenomenon that will increase blood pressure.
- Reduce the risk of blood clots. Moderate consumption of red wine may have a slight blood-thinning effect, reducing the risk of thrombosis (clot formation). Note that these benefits are observed only with low-to-moderate consumption.
Is it good to drink red wine every day to combat cholesterol?
As you can see, moderate consumption of red wine can have protective effects, but drinking it daily is not without risk!
Limits and risks not to be ignored.
While red wine contains some interesting molecules, it remains an alcoholic beverage. And alcohol presents several risks:
- Excessive consumption can lead to addiction and increased triglycerides.
- Even at low doses, alcohol increases the risk of high blood pressure, liver disease and cancer,
- The protective effect observed in some studies could berelated to other factors, such as a Mediterranean diet or regular physical activity.
The key, then, is moderation, and it's best to limit alcohol consumption to one 15cl glass a day, and not every day, as part of a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet.
There's no point in starting to drink red wine if you don't usually drink it, as alcohol is not a medicine (even "medoc...")!
Red wine polyphenols are also found in red grapes, cocoa, green tea and red fruits, which offer the same benefits without the alcohol.
Hypercholesterolemia: how to drink red wine safely?
These few tips will help you enjoy red wine without putting your health at risk.
Respect the principle of moderation.
The protective effect of red wine is observed only at low doses. Beyond one glass a day, alcohol becomes more harmful than beneficial.
If you suffer from hypercholesterolemia, an occasional consumption, during a festive meal for example, allows you to benefit from polyphenols without the negative effects of alcohol.
Adopt a healthy daily diet
Drinking red wine as part of a balanced dietis essential to limit risks. Pair it with:
- Fiber-rich foods(vegetables, fruit, whole grains) to reduce cholesterol absorption.
- Good fats (oily fish, olive oil, nuts), essential for balancing the lipid profile.
- Few sugars and processed foods, which aggravate hypercholesterolemia.
Ideal? A glass of red wine with a Mediterranean-style meal recognized for its cardiovascular benefits.
Avoid certain pitfalls.
- Don't drink red wine outside of meals, as this accelerates blood alcohol peaks.
- Don't mix red wine with other alcohols (beer, white wine, whisky, etc.).
- Ideally, seek medical advice if you have other risk factors, such as high blood pressure, diabetes or hypertriglyceridemia.
In short, it's possible to drink red wine when you have excess cholesterol, but in moderate quantities, and not every day. A balanced diet, an active lifestyle and good stress management are just as essential for optimum heart health.
- Red wine, rich in polyphenols, can have a mild protective effect on the heart, only if consumed in moderation, as part of a healthy diet.
