Jean Pierre Laroche, a vascular physician in Avignon who has been involved in prevention for many years, reminds us of this in his blog Medvasc https://medvasc.info. He was behind the Vesale operation 4 or 5 years ago, which resulted in the detection of 729 AAA out of 36,500 people, i.e. a prevalence of 2%. The ratio was 1 woman to 5 men. If women had not been screened, 124 aneurysms would have been ignored, and would have corresponded statistically to 28 deaths. AAA should therefore be screened in women aged 65 and over who smoke or have high blood pressure. And also in women over 50 whose parents have had AAA. In Vesale, 98% of the AAAs screened were smokers. It should also be noted that the rupture rate of small AAAs is four times higher in women than in men. It is therefore necessary to adapt the criteria for initiating treatment to women. Finally, it should be noted that for years, women have been under-represented in vascular surgery, including in randomized trials of AAA management. It's never too late to change.
