BRAUN

Born in Belfort (90) into a family with deep roots in the medical profession (fourth generation of doctors), married, father of two children, François Braun studied in Nancy and specialized in intensive care before moving into what would become emergency medicine under the guidance of his mentors, Professors A. Larcan and H. Lambert. After two years with SAMU 54, he joined the Verdun General Hospital in 1986 as a resident, then as a hospital physician, department head, and finally head of the “Emergency-SAMU” division. He has published regularly on myocardial infarction in rural settings and served as a member of the jury for the consensus conference on “Management of Acute Myocardial Infarction Outside Cardiology Departments” (2007). In June 2009, he became head of the Emergency Department and SAMU 57 at the Metz-Thionville Regional Hospital Center (CHR), and was appointed division head in 2018.
Deeply involved in disaster medicine and exceptional public health situations, he responded to the 1990 earthquake in Iran and the 1993 crisis in Bosnia, managed numerous emergency drills, participated in the care of victims of terrorist attacks (Paris, 2015), and helped manage the COVID-19 health crisis.
François Braun played an active role in establishing the specialty of emergency medicine and in its development as Secretary General and later President of Samu-Urgences de France, as well as Vice President of the SFMU. He is one of the founders of the Healthcare Access Service.
As Minister of Health and Prevention (2022–2023), he championed a holistic and humanistic vision of health, advocating for regional and collaborative solutions among the various stakeholders. Deeply committed to prevention and women’s health, he discovered the “women’s bus” during a trip to Cannes. Immediately impressed by Claire and Thierry’s unwavering dedication, he asked them to launch a specific initiative within the Ministry of Health, which was implemented a few months later.
Since November 2023, he has resumed clinical and administrative duties at the Metz-Thionville Regional Hospital Center (CHR). Working with the facility’s gynecologists and cardiologists, he has organized two “Acting for Women’s Hearts” events in Metz.
Convinced that prevention is not solely the responsibility of the Ministry of Health and policymakers, he advocates for “citizen-led” and “community-based” prevention. It is in this spirit that he is honored to join the board of directors.
