The benefits of hormone therapy for menopause

The benefits of hormone therapy for menopause

87% of women are affected by at least one menopausal symptom, and 67% suffer from genitourinary disorders. Of these, one woman in four experiences severe symptoms during the peri- and immediate post-menopause (Gemvi 2022 study).

Menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) consists in replacing the natural
natural hormones (estrogen and progesterone) that the ovaries produce less and less from the age of 50 onwards. It reduces hot flushes, vaginal dryness, mood disorders and improves sleep.

But only 6% of French women aged 50 to 65 now benefit from HRT, compared with 35% before 2002.

This is partly due to the American Women's Health Initiative study, which concluded in 2002 that certain combined treatments increased the risk of breast cancer and cardiovascular events.

Since then, critics have pointed out flaws in this study, which focused on women in their sixties on average, an age when cardiovascular risks are naturally higher.

In addition, dosages were lowered, formulas improved and prescription duration limited.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration recently announced that it would ask manufacturers to remove a warning message warning of the potential risks associated with these drugs. It now considers this to be exaggerated.

Referred to by the French Ministry of Health, the French National Authority for Health (HAS) has re-evaluated all specialties indicated for menopausal hormone therapy (HRT), taking into account the new data.

It remains true, however, that the prescription of HRT must take into account each individual tolerance profile, after taking into account the various risk factors.
