Menopause: overcoming taboos and talking about it

50% of women in France consider that the menopause has an impact on their work... 10% of women in the UK say they have resigned from their job because of its symptoms... 20 to 25% of women have severe disorders identified as menopause-related... 1 in 2 women doesn't even dare talk about it with her partner!

17.2 million women over 45 are already affected by menopause. That's half of all women in France!

Around the age of 50, cardiovascular risk can skyrocket, due to the progressive deficiency of natural estrogens. Women tend to put on weight, and develop high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. They need to pay particular attention to their lifestyle.

Women may also experience symptoms that affect their quality of life: hot flushes, sweating, sleep or mood disorders, coldness, joint pain, genital-urinary problems, reduced libido, feelings of fatigue. These are associated with an increased cardiovascular and metabolic risk.

In the medium term, menopause is also associated with bone calcium loss (osteoporosis), which needs to be regularly screened and treated.

Transdermal hormone therapy based on natural estrogens and natural progesterone is the most effective. Prescribed less than 10 years after the onset of menopause, in symptomatic women under 60, it is associated with a reduction in cardiovascular mortality.

However, it should not be prescribed to women with a history of heart, stroke, arterial or venous disease, so a cardiovascular and gynaecological check-up should be carried out prior to prescription.
