More than just the simplest means of getting around, walking is a physical activity in its own right, with a wealth of benefits.
"Walking is the best medicine for man", Hippocrates once said. He was a visionary, for nothing has changed since then.
Walking is a fabulous means of preventing a wide range of ailments. Muscles are the first to benefit, not forgetting joints and skeletal bones. 4 hours' walking a week reduces the risk of hip fracture by 43%.
Walking is also the brain's health partner of choice. Just two hours' walking a week could reduce the risk of stroke by 30%.
As for memory, walking for 40 minutes three times a week is said to have protective effects on the areas of the brain responsible for memorization. Finally, symptoms of depression are reduced by 36% with 30 minutes of daily walking. It also prevents dementia, reduces the risk of developing Alzheimer's disease, and helps combat stress.
3,500 steps a day reduces the risk of diabetes by 29%, and the risk of developing cardiovascular disease is significantly reduced after 30 minutes of daily walking. Blood pressure is reduced, as are cholesterol levels, and overall cardiovascular function is improved.
