This is the most common heart rhythm abnormality, manifested by irregular, too-fast heartbeats. In half the cases, it causes no particular symptoms. In the other half, it can cause shortness of breath, palpitations (usually irregular) or abnormal fatigue. After the age of 55, one person in 3 will develop atrial fibrillation, especially in the presence of risk factors: hypertension, diabetes, obesity, sleep apnea....
And yet the consequences can sometimes be very serious: a 5-fold increase in the risk of stroke. This is caused by a blood clot that forms in the left atrium of the heart and migrates into the vessels that supply blood to the brain. Atrial fibrillation can be prevented simply by checking your pulse regularly, especially if you are experiencing symptoms. If the pulse is irregular, the diagnosis must be confirmed rapidly by an electrocardiogram, so that we can discuss the introduction of an oral anticoagulant treatment to help prevent stroke. Talk to your doctor.
