Women survive cardiac arrest less than men

Their early warning signs are less easily diagnosed, and they are often less quickly rescued.

Women survive cardiac arrest less than men

These findings are based on data from 15 members of the European Society of Cardiology (ESCAPE-NET) to create a database of over 100,000 people who have suffered cardiac arrest. When women have warning symptoms, they don't (re)know them. These are often atypical symptoms, such as palpitations, extreme tiredness on exertion, a sort of epigastric discomfort and anguish, a feeling of being oppressed, but they don't always have a sudden pain in the chest. As a result, women contact the emergency services too late. And when a woman is rescued quickly, many people still don't dare perform cardiac massage on their chest, out of embarrassment or fear of doing the wrong thing.
In the end, there's a succession of lost opportunities between the onset of symptoms, the call for help and the emergency services. What we need today is for women to listen to themselves and not hesitate to get tested. If you come from a family of coronary sufferers, or if your parents have had problems, you should tell your doctor and have a cardiovascular check-up, especially after the menopause. If you have risk factors, are a smoker, are taking contraception and are experiencing strange symptoms, consult or call 15, especially if you have a hereditary background.
